What is FWIRN?

The Future of Work and Income Research Network (FWIRN) is a UK-based, interdisciplinary network of researchers inside and outside of universities whose research aims at understanding and preparing for changes to the world of work.

We aim to create an online space where policymakers and activists can find the research they need to make informed choices, researchers can promote their findings to a wider community, and everybody interested in the future of work can come together to discuss and debate the biggest issues. We also organise events to bring together this community and share ideas with the broader public.

The Founders

  • Alex Douglas

Alex Douglas is interested in the history and philosophy of political economy. His book, The Philosophy of Debt, examines the concept of debt through the lenses of language, history, and political economy.

  • Ben Sachs

Ben Sachs is interested in distributive justice questions concerning work, welfare, and income, as well as other theoretical and applied issues in ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law. His book, Contractarianism, Role Obligations, and Political Morality, is available from Routledge as of November 2021.

Philosophy at Work

The network was founded by two philosophers and has an emphasis on research that connects with fundamental philosophical questions such as:

  • What is work?

  • Should we be aiming at reducing work or transforming it?

  • How should different types of work be paid or otherwise remunerated?

  • What are the viable alternatives to the way we currently organise human activity and distribute its products?
